Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans (Medigap)
Increasing your coverage with a Medicare Supplement insurance plan (also referred to as Medigap) will increase your coverage, quality of care, and provide significant savings on unexpected medical bills.
What is a Medicare Supplement insurance plan?
Medicare Supplement insurance plans, also called Medigap policies, are used in conjunction with Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) to fill in some coverage gaps, including copayments, coinsurance and deductibles, as well as emergency overseas healthcare. These plans are sold by private companies.
Medicare Supplement plans pay for costs you’d normally be responsible for paying under Original Medicare as long as you pay your monthly premium. With a Medicare Supplement plan, you can better predict your expenses and make better use of your hard-earned retirement. The best is that you’re not required to use a network of providers—choose any doctor or specialist that accepts Medicare without a referral, and never worry about losing your preferred physician.
Medicare Supplement insurance plans do no not cover long-term care, hearing, vision, dental or prescription drug coverage. For Medicare plans offering coverage beyond hospital and medical insurance, see our Medicare Advantage plans.

† Plan F also offers a high-deductible plan. If you choose this option, this means you must pay for Medicare-covered costs up to the deductible amount of $2,180 in 2016 before your Medigap plan pays anything.
‡ After you meet your out-of-pocket yearly limit and your yearly Part B deductible, the Medigap plan pays 100% of covered services for the rest of the calendar year.
* Plan N pays 100% of the Part B coinsurance, except for a copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to a $50 copayment for emergency room visits that don’t result in inpatient admission.
You live in Massachusetts, Minnesota, or Wisconsin
If you live in one of these 3 states, Medigap policies are standardized in a different way:
Massachusetts
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Any one of these plans can be used to pay for expenses incurred under Original Medicare.
Medicare Supplement insurance pays a share of your expenses after Medicare pays. Medicare Supplement plans have a monthly premium that must be paid in addition to the Medicare Part B monthly premium.
To be eligible for a Medicare Supplement, you must already have Original Medicare. You can apply for a Medicare Supplement insurance policy even if you have a Medicare Advantage plan (Medicare Part C).
Medicare Supplement plans have continuous coverage, as long as you pay your monthly premium. You can only apply for these plans when you first become eligible and during the open enrollment period.
Comprehensive Medicare Coverage on a Fixed Budget
Get the convenient care you need, without the added out-of-pocket expenses left by gaps in Original Medicare. With the right plan, you can keep the doctors you know and trust while enjoying secure benefits that won’t change, at a foreseeable low cost.
